Google Announces Major Changes to Mobile Search at Search On Conference

At today’s Google Search On conference, the company announced five significant updates to how people search on mobile devices.

Starting today on the Google app for iOS, you’ll find shortcuts to various actions you can perform other than typing a traditional search query.

In the coming months, Google plans to enhance the mobile search bar with features that will help users discover more relevant results.

The way Google displays results on mobile is set to change, becoming more visual with an increased emphasis on images and video.

Here’s more information on the updates rolling out today and in the near future.

1. Google Search Shortcuts

There are various methods to search Google beyond typing a text query. You can find products by uploading screenshots, translate text with Google Lens, or even find songs by humming into the microphone.

Now, on the Google app for iOS, all these advanced search methods will be more apparent with tappable shortcuts.

2. Results In The Search Bar

Google is making it faster to find things in mobile search by displaying links to results directly in the search bar. When you start typing, Google will begin populating results before you finish submitting the query.

This feature is scheduled to be rolled out in the coming months.

3. Enhanced Query Refinements

Google is making it easier to find the most relevant results by offering an assortment of query refinements. As you type a query into the mobile search bar, Google will provide ideas to make your question more specific.

4. Google Web Stories

Google is enhancing mobile search visually with a deeper integration of Google Web Stories. Google has announced that it’s making it easier to explore a subject by highlighting the most relevant and helpful information, including content from creators on the open web.

You can explore a subject like cities through visual stories and short videos from travelers, getting tips on how to explore the city, things to do, travel tips, and other important information for travelers.

The content presentation almost mirrors the look of iOS widgets. You can tap on a story to open it in full-screen mode.

5. Combining Text, Images, & Video

Google is transforming mobile search results pages into an endless stream of discovery. You won’t need to toggle between the Web, Images, and Video tabs anymore, as Google will display all content types on the front page.

This combination of text, images, and video is described as a "reimagining" of how Google delivers search results. The most relevant content from various sources will be shown regardless of format.

Additionally, users will have the option to continue scrolling to explore related queries. You can tap "More search results" or keep scrolling to explore related topics.

These new ways to explore information on mobile search will be introduced over the next few months.
